John McCain's Attempt at Pop Culture - And it is Bad....

After the furor over Paris Hilton and John McCain trying to make a case against Barack Obama saying that his campaign is "pop culture", it is interesting to note that John McCain actually has decided to join the pop culture. His daughter is now writing a blog from the campaign trail called McCainblogette.com. The tag line? It is " Musings and pop culture on the political trail".

She is attempting to cash in on the Paris Hilton motif and try to be one herself (after seeing pictures, I hate to say it but she is no Paris Hilton). As if to prove her airheadness she admits she became a Republican as a "Father's day gift". Sounds like as much thought went into that as Bush gave to invading Iraq.

Anyway, I thought it was just incredibly interesting that less than 1 month prior he was making a case for how "serious" he was versus the "pop culture" Obama. And now this. For those who will most likely reply and say, "It is his daughter not him that is doing this" I say, "yeah, right"? You do not think this is well scripted and planned?

As if to say, You voters out there are really stuipid, the disclaimers on the site say, "this is not affiliated with the John McCain for President Campaign". Ok, it is written from the McCain bus, by McCain's daughter who has special access and speaks at campaign rallies. Not affiliated?

Morning Roundup - August 17, 2008

9:04: The Germans rightfully opine the U.S. has little to no leverage in the Georgia invasion. The article addresses the realpolitik aspect of it. I think it is mostly because we are also an invading Country.

8:53: The savior of a lot of companies during this down turn in the economy has been that they are global. Basically, the story has been, yes the U.S. is down but the rest of the world is booming so we are still doing well. This may be coming to an end. Der Spiegel reports the German Economy is contracting. Why? You guessed it.. high fuel and food prices. The title of the report is "It is the Economy, Stupid". Sound familiar.

8:39 - Pretty clear, as seen in this admission by Scott McClellan, that the Bush White House actually sent talking points to the Faux News Network night time journalists propagandists. His excuse? Everyone does it.

Over at Pajamas media (the All Anti Obama Channel All the Time), Kyle Ann-Shiver discusses the All Totalitarian Olympics. She makes good points but I did not see where she addressed why our President chose to legitimatize these games with his presence.

Another right winger trying to sell the "Obama has no experience" mantra. Right from the Faux news talking points. This one actually states that being in a POW camp gives you experience. Of course, the question they never address, if you take their mantra at face value (hard to do and not laugh)  is where has all this experience landed us? A horrible economy, a war that will never end, out of control inflation, a resurgent Russia, our economy and jobs in the hands of China and absolutely no respect from the rest of the world. This all happened under the "Experience watch".

If that is experience, I will take inexperience any day.

Deployed troops are finding time to donate 6-1 in favor of Obama's campaign over McCain (Bush III). As the article shows, remember the right wing nut arguments of "if you don't support Bush's policies you do not support the troops"? Well, I guess the troops don't support the troops in the Right wing nut world.

Pat Buchanan discusses "bear baiting" and the hypocrisy of Bush's rhetoric on the Georgia / Russia conflict. Conclusion: As I stated in an earlier post, we have no moral standing here thanks to the bumbling mistakes of George Bush.

This is an older link but I had not read this yet. Another "Milblog" is shut down by the Army. Remember the saying of Milblogs, "Free speech from those who keep it free". I guess this Milblog was "too free".

John McCain: Is He An American Hero or Has He Rewritten History?

A very interesting expose on what McCain has done, or failed to do, for the American POWs who were left behind in Vietnam.

McCain: "In the 21st Century, Nations Don't Invade Other Nations"

Ok, I am sure you cannot possibly believe the "war" candidate of the far right could have actually have said this so I will post the Youtube Video. Honestly, is this guy dumber than Bush or what?

Juan Cole at Informed Comment has great commentary on this as well.

6 Killed, 10 Injured in Car Bomb Attack in Baghdad

Seems like, right on cue, as American soldiers leave the place starts blowing up again.

Iraq's Long Term Consequence: We Have NO Credibility in Georgia

The long term consequences of the Iraq war are economic, political and, most important, devastation of human life. We will be paying for this war for the life of my children and veterans and their families will be devastated from the trauma for at least a decade.

However, today I want to point out the political aspects of the war and, more importantly, the global political consequences. We are seeing them pan out right now in Georgia. As Russia continues a brutal invasion into Georgia we want to tell them to stop. We want to tell them that countries in the 21st century should not invade other countries. We want to tell them that senseless killing is not the way to resolve your disputes. The Republican Candidate for President, John McCain had this interesting quote:

"In the 21st Century Nations do not invade other nations"

To which, all I can say is, "Huh?

The long term impact of this war in Iraq is we have no credibility to say or do anything against Russia right now. Except for excusing the quote above by crediting it to early signs of dementia and Alzheimer's, how can we say that? Clinton could have said it, Bush one could have said it, heck, even Reagan could have said it with a straight face. But, the United States cannot say this and therefore we cannot even begin to have any moral standing concerning this fight in Georgia.

For the record, I think Russia is another power hungry brutal country which is violating a sovereign country's right to exist. This activity in Georgia should be stopped immediately. However, the point of this entry was to point out the precarious position Bush has put our great Country. We no longer can own the "bully pulpit" when actions like this occur. I am sure Russia is saying, "Hey, you invaded Iraq we invaded Georgia so what?"

Those who want to argue about the real or perceived threat to Russia from Georgia v. the Iraq threat to the United States will go down a slope they cannot win. Further, don't say "We were attacked first" because even Bush has admitted and stipulated that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11.

Face it, we went into Iraq to conduct regime change, protect oil and because we thought one day they might be a threat. We preempted that threat. Russia will say the same about Georgia and we will have no moral leg to stand on.

This is an example of the irreparable harm Bush has done to this Country.

A die-hard "Invade Iraq" fan is calling for the removal of the "Barbarians" from Georgia.

Marines Play a Sick Game of "Whack a Mole"

Well, it looks like the Pentagon is at it again. This time the show is in Afghanistan and they are extending Marine Tours in that Country. Sorry to the loved ones, you will have to wait.

Crazy isn't it? If we have just concentrated on Afghanistan in the first place, they would all be home by now.

An Interesting Twist on the "Drill Now" for Oil Crowd

A few things I will never understand about the "drill more" crowd:

1) Why would the oil companies want to increase the supply of oil? The only reason would be if they thought they could keep the price the same and just sell more of it right? Or, if the price decreased, they would have to sell a lot more so their overall profits remain the same. So, if they increase the supply of oil by drilling off of, let's say, Ft. Myers, the oil companies would have to ensure they are compensated for all the variable costs of the future drilling, the fixed costs (if any went up) then either demand would have to increase dramatically, to offset the lower prices, or they would just have more oil and charge a higher price.

The oil companies like the new price / profit point they are at and trust me, unless the Government forces them off of it, you will never see it decrease again.

2) Does anyone really believe that if the price of gas dropped back down to let's say, $2.00 per gallon, the right wingers would be for "green" policies and alternative energies? I hear people say that we just need to drill more to "bide us time" so we can develop the new energies but while we are developing them, we should have cheap oil.

Ya, right. Remember just a few short years ago what the argument was for NOT INVESTING in solar, hybrid etc? The excuse, from the right wing was, "The market is not signaling us to invest. Look, oil is cheap and that means it is plentiful so why would I invest in solar"? The history of the last 10 years has been that the market will never invest in solar, hybrid etc. (Toyota aside who always seems to have a great knack of investing in the future) unless they are FORCED to (Whether through market forces or Government action).

Finally, remember, the leases we are talking about are on GOVERNMENT LAND. This is not like the Government is forcing the oil companies to not drill on land they already own. So, in my mind, this is the "free market" and it is "no government intervention" at its finest. We should have NO GOVERNMENT intervention and that means the Government should lease or give away NO LAND. Let the free market run amok right?

What is funny about this is that the "drill now crowd" is mostly made up of laissez - faire conservatives yet, in essence, what they are doing is BEGGING FOR GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION to help with oil prices.

More on Brett Favre - Looks Like He will Return to Green Bay Tonight

Looks like Brett Favre will be returning to Green Bay tonight and will resume practice with the team. Packers will either need to trade or put a uniform on him.  Catch up on all the Favre action at Take Favre Back!

The Karl Rove Style of Campaigning Has Begun

Well, we knew it was too good to be true. John McCain even had committed many times to not take the low road and to campaign on issues that are important to the nation. But, alas, the Republicans cannot do that especially when issues mean they lose the election.

So, we now have a Britney Spears and Paris Hilton Video. The Video is childish and will not do anything except get the already far gone, neo con Nazi right all excited. But, then again, they would never vote for Barack anyway so who cares? But, what does this video say about McCain?

First, it says he is being controlled by handlers. Maybe he will become the "Weekend at Bernie's" candidate. I say this because John McCain is a noble man and I have heard him talk outside of the passions of the election. He would never do this. So, what you have is, once again, much like Bush was run by Cheney, someone in the background is running McCain.

Second, it says that those handlers are mocking the American people. For some reason, millions of Americans have been driven to Barack's message and rather than try to understand those Americans, they mock them. Let me be clear, we can take it. No problem. "Bring it on". But it does say something about the character of those running the McCain campaign. They don't just disagree with you. They mock you. They make fun of you. They think you are using the same evaluation of a Presidential candidate that you would for a T.V. star. That is what the handlers think of you.

Further, what does this say about how they think of the American people in generally? This ad was designed to do two things: 1) Mock the Obama supporters to try to get us in the mud. We won't do that. In fact, Barack's response has been fantastic: "Is that the best you can come up with" he says to John McCain. 2) His handlers must believe that the intelligence of the American people is so low that they will allow this to distract them from the war, a horrible economy, losing their home, being unemployed, having no health care and having an education system that is falling apart. Not to mention our national infrastructure falling apart while we spend billions building bridges in Iraq.

Finally, remember, the candidates are the best they ever will be while they are campaigning. It only makes sense since they are fighting for the job right now. So think about it. If McCain is starting here, about as low as you can go, where will he end up.

The lesson for Barack supporters is to keep your head up, ignore the "static" of McCain in the background (yes, his campaign is so bad right now, he has just become static or background noise), and stay focused on delivering solutions to the American people.

Note: Even military officers have been caught up in this mudslinging as evidenced by Mudville Gazette's posting (yes, I know it is "Mrs. Greyhawk" but for those that have followed this military blog pornography, you know she is just a surrogate). Imagine, these are the guys leading your sons and daughters.

HR 3221 Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008

Well, the Federal Government swoops down again to give out dollars to those who need it and to those who don't. This bill needs to be read and digested in its entirety but a few things:

  1. It increases the statutory limit on the Deficit by $800bl!!  This money seems to "poof" come from thin air and now our sons and daughters get to pay for our excesses.
  2. The CBO estimates this adds $25bl net to the deficit next year alone.
  3. It provides interesting "give aways" to people who have nothing to do with the mortgage mess. For example, if you have already paid off your mortgage and do not itemize they are going to give you a $1,000 tax credit for "property tax". So, what does this have to do with the ARM adjustments and foreclosures?
I cannot wait for the next few weeks when people pour over this bill and find the pork deep inside of it. If you want to see the CBO (Congressional Budget office) estimates you can go the Congressional Budget Office website and download the bill HR3221 report. You can also see the CBO letter concerning how much the bail out of Freddie May and Fanny Mac will cost you at the Congressional Budget Office Director's blog.

Treasury Inflation Protected Securities (TIPS) - A Good Buy Still?

Was wondering if anyone is buying TIPS (Treasury Inflation Protected Securities)?  I have always kept some and some i-bonds (until recently when they went to crap with a 0% inflation payment and limit to $5K purchase).  Turns out with the inflation kicking in these have become "portfolio savers" and have really balanced my portfolio nicely (TIPS Vanguard Fund has returned 15% in the last year). I chose to use the Vanguard Fund due to all the tax consequences and nuances of holding the TIPs as actual bonds.

So, it was and is good to have in the overall portfolio. Business Week called it in 2005 , and MSNBC called it back in 2002 when inflation was but a whisper (I like what he says, "The best time to buy flood insurance is during a drought) but my question now is, do you buy more? I guess you do if you believe we are on the front end of the inflationary spiral (as I do) or do you think, with oil prices recently receding, we are on the back end of the inflationary spiral?

As you all know, tomorrow is the day. Will Favre show or won't he? Who knows but I still hold true to my belief that the Packers have to put the best team they can out on the field. This team clearly would have Brett Favre at QB if it were not for management egos.

Obama presses Europe on Afghanistan in Berlin

Obama presses Europe on Afghanistan in Berlin | Politics | Reuters

After reading about this trip and his speech, i am now convinced, more than ever, Barack Obama needs to be our next President. We deserve better than what we have had for the last 8 years under George Bush and we do not need a third term of George Bush under his surrogate, John McCain.

The speech Barack Obama gave in Berlin today showed his balanced approach. This is a critical aspect of Barack, he is balanced. The Republicans want to paint him as a far left liberal and it just kills them that he is not a "whacko". They wish he was; they try to make him out to be one, but the American people and others who hear him know differently.

Perhaps John McCain should not have dared Obama to go on this trip. This was the "dare" that back fired and may go down in history as the biggest political blunder. John McCain must have thought that either Obama would not go or he would go and do something foolish. Exactly the reverse has happened. Barack Obama is a "rock star" in the world and his trip was a huge success. The most John McCain can do now is take one liner pot shots at Obama which are not even funny any more. They mostly are just ignored.

Barack Obama has now shown himself to have statesman like qualities and, quite frankly, can deal with the international scene just as good as a former POW. Again, while being a POW makes you brave and a hero, it does nothing to make you more qualified to be President of the United States. If military service was required then I would be more qualified than Barack Obama and I am not.

Nope, sorry John... no gaffes on this trip and your wish to be able to ride Obama with the "I dare you to go overseas" did not come true. Yes, you want to speak in Berlin, the problem is that only about 10 people would show up to listen to you.

One of the key disasters of the George Bush Presidency is the fact that we are isolated in the world. Barack Obama has shown he will melt the ice and engage the world and they will listen and engage back. That alone is a reason to select Obama over George Bush III.

'It's gonna be a bloodbath,' fallen soldier told father

'It's gonna be a bloodbath,' fallen soldier told father - CNN.com.

These brave soldiers died due to George Bush's incompetence. The blood of their death is on Bush's hands. If we were not diverted into the silly war in Iraq, we would have long ago squashed the Taliban.

Instead, we get side tracked by an incompetent President, Vice President, SecDEF etc. and now these brave soldiers will not come home.

Mr. Bush... You should go to the funeral of these soldiers and personally APOLOGIZE for your role in their slaughter.

Barack Obama Speech on National Security

Barack Obama laid out a great strategy for how to lead the Country through very turbulant geo-political times. As he says, it is not about one aspect of the strategy (military), it is, rather, about ensuring all aspects of foreign affairs are attended to.  Key questions:

  1. What is needed
  2. What MUST be done
  3. What can be done
Key issues we are addressing:
  1. Military turbulance
  2. Economic unrest.
After 9/11, the United States was as united as possible. Everyone was with us. We had allies and citizens signed up to do whatever we needed to do. Imagine what could have been done if we had someone with judgement, charecter and intelligence in the White House. We could have:
  1. Hunted down Osama Bin Laden
  2. Secured nuclear threats
  3. Invested heavily into alternative energy
  4. Secured our Nation and its ports
  5. Invested in science and technology and education
Ah, but what did we do:
  1. Waged a war against a Country that had nothing to do with 9/11
  2. Got 4,000+ soldiers killed
  3. Alienated the world.
The fact of the matter is that this war distracts us from what we need to do to confront the challenges of the 21st century. This Iraqi war has made us less safe and not more safe. That is a clear fact. We need to LEAD the world and not alienate the entire world as we / George W. Bush have.

Barack has Five Goals for national security:

  1. End war in Iraq responsibly
  2. Finish the fight against al Qaeda and the Taliban
  3. Secure nuclear weapons from terrorists and rogue states
  4. Stop alienating the rest of the world
  5. Securing our energy future

US looks to send more troops to Afghanistan soon

US looks to send more troops to Afghanistan soon.

The need for soldiers in Afghanistan is getting very real. Watch for troops to be shuffled off from Iraq after the retreat operation in Iraq is complete.

Of course, this is where we should have been all along. Think of how the Afghanistan war would have ended a long time ago if we had not become sidetracked by this idiotic Iraq war.

Packers: Take Favre Back NOW!!!

Photo

I understand all the hype about why the Packers do not want to take the greatest quarterback of all time who can still out play 99% of the quarterbacks in the league back.. NOT!!   Look, this is all about egos and pride. The Packers have a big ego and they want to show they are Green Bay's team and not Brett Favre's team.

As a fan, I say, WHO CARES!! Their responsibility to the fans is to put the best football team on the field they can.. period. Nothing else. And Brett Favre at QB would be the best thing they could do for the team. If you doubt it, ask the receivers, I am sure they will tell you.

Brett DESERVES the right to come back and if he wants to change his mind 15 times, so be it, he should be able to do that. He put up with the stupidity of the Packers when they hired Ray Rhodes didn't he?

I have dedicated a new blog to "Take Favre Back". I will post developments there as they happen.

Individual Ready Reservist (IRR) called to redeploy

Another sad story of an Individual Ready Reservist being yanked out of his home in the back door draft. The really sad part is that most of the Country stopped caring a long time ago. They do not care about the war, they do not, for the most part, care about the soldiers who are dying and they certainly do not care about the civilians being drafted and dragged back to active duty.

Read: Reservist called to redeploy - SGVTribune.com.

You can also read this very nice letter that Michael Stiteler's wife wrote to their Congressman.

The definitive way to stop the war is to get Barack Obama elected. To do that, you must do your part. DONATE TO BARACK OBAMA. Any amount is needed; whatever you can afford.

More Details on Matthis Chiroux: IRR Soldier Refusing to Deploy

As I have written before, I believe what Matthis is doing is a noble thing. He could easily be "laying low" and the Army would never notice. Instead, he is standing up and being vocal for what he believes.

My experience is the numbers he is quoting about those who do not show up are probably accurate. Many have just decided to "blow off" the orders and the Army is too screwed up to care. They also know that if they start physically hauling people in, the news cycle will be so anti military that the Army will never get another recruit.

Good luck Matthis Chiroux!

TorontoSun.com - Canada- Resister still wary of U.S.

This is an interesting quick IRR read concerning a soldier who fled to Canada. A spokesman for the US ARMY, Maj Nathan Banks, said of being in the IRR:

" "His chances of getting called up are slim to none," Banks said. But that chance is still there, he acknowledged."

There it is!! How many IRR soldiers had a "Major" or someone say that to them to trick them into signing contracts? A lot. This is a BS statement  by a low level (Yes, in the Army, a Major is a very low level) administrator who does not know what the F he is talking about.

This solder, Corey Glass, is absolutely right to be very skeptical of what the Army says or promises. He is dead on: When they issue him a DD214 then we can "talk turkey".

Bush: Olympic boycott would insult Chinese - CNN.com.

Bush is showing his colors again. Interested in human rights? Only when it makes him money. Here, the lack of human rights is making him a ton of money so he is perfectly happy with breaking bread at the table of one of the most brutal dictatorships and COMMUNIST dictatorships at that.

Bush and friends make billions off of the slave labor in China so that qualifies for a state visit. When it was clear Saddam was not playing ball with Bush and friends, Bush killed him. You know, if Saddam was flowing oil freely to the west and was providing us goods and services, even with abuses, torture and slave labor, Bush would have been embracing Saddam. If there is any doubt about this, watch Bush's actions in China.

Senator Jim Webb's Article on The Iraq War - Written in September of 2002

I am a big fan of Senator James Webb. I am a big fan because he is a true conservative and in the biggest decision of the last 10 years, whether to take the United States into a long term war with no end in site or not, he was absolutely right in saying we should not do it. He was, actually, prophetic in his prediction of what would happen if went to war in Iraq and he wrote it down in a Washington Post Article so no one can dispute that he made the call.

I attach a copy of the article for your reading pleasure but here are some highlights. First, he reminds us that there are other ways to accomplish your task you need to get done without going into a "hot" war. Indeed, shooting wars should be the last resort. He reminds us that we won the Cold War through continued political and military maneuvering without ever firing a meaningful shot (For the neocon nuts who will respond, please don't tell me the USSR went down because we invaded Grenada).  He asks the appropriate question:

"Is there an absolutely vital national interest that should lead us from containment to unilateral war and a long-term occupation of Iraq? And would such a war and its aftermath actually increase our ability to win the war against international terrorism?"

Of course what is so insighful in this question is he is actually thinking about what happens after we invade and occupy Iraq. Something apparently Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld missed in the planning process. He goes on:

"The first reality (of war) is that wars often have unintended consequences -- ask the Germans, who in World War I were convinced that they would defeat the French in exactly 42 days. The second is that a long-term occupation of iraq would beyond doubt require an adjustment of force levels elsewhere, and could eventually diminish American Influence in other parts of the world"

Is this not what has happenned? We have no military credibility with North Korea because they know we can't do anything about what they are doing. Same with Iran. China just happily ignores us like a stuck lion who cannot even get up let alone fight.  Some key words Webb used here were "Long term occupation of Iraq". Yes, he predicted exactly what would happen (Remember Rummy and Bush saying no one could have possibly known what would happen in Iraq? Guess they do not read the Washington Post.)

Webb goes on to idenfity that occupying Iraq would not be like the relative docile nature of the Japanese occupation. He says:

"In Japan, American occupation forces quickly became 50,000 friends. In Iraq, they would quickly become 50,000 terrorist targets."

Wow... was that a prediction or what? He then goes on to very succintly outline why our planned invasion of Iraq would be a huge windfall for China. Miring the US down in a war with the Muslim world would allow China to become dominant. And, as we have seen, that has happenned in a big way.

You should read this article, study it and keep reminding yourself it was written before the invasion as a treatise and prediction of what would happen if we invaded.

This man should be the Democratic Vice President and could then become President. The Democrats would become the party of true conservatives and the Republicans would be set aside for what they are: Neo Conservative raving lunatics.

McCain is Running Scared... Americans are Declaring Independence Again!

Below is Barack Obama's discussion of why he opted out of public campaign financing. It is a good explanation and the Right thing to do. While McCain will get silly with "flip flopping" he knows exactly why this was done and he is running scared. The Republicans are masters at using surrogates like the "Swift Boat veterans for truth" 527 program. The Republicans not only use these but I am convinced they help coordinate them. Then, if the ads turn out to not work or there is a public outcry, they can disassociate themselves with the group and say they were not part of it. They have their cake and eat it too. They "opt in" but have millions of dollars behind them lying and smearing the Democratic opponent. Well, not this time.

Barack Obaama is going to put together the largest grass roots campaign we have seen in this century. Ordinary Americans are going to "Declare Independence" from the nastiness the Republicans have brought to Washington. We will do this by funding Barack Obama then voting for Barack. And McCain is running scared. he cannot possibly compete on money. He will find every 527 attack ad will be responded to immediately and with overwhelming force. Just like a military operation,  you have have to know your enemy and meet them with huge overwhelming force and that is what we are doing. McCain may think it is his destiny to be President but it is not. It is the destiny of this Country that Americans take it back. We will fight for our rights and special interests will die on the vine. The world is changing.

Read the continuation to see the Barack Obama video.

Momentum is Building for Barack Obama to Select Jim Webb for 2008

After I wrote that I supported the selection of Jim Webb for VP, I received this picture from a reader. This tells me that there are big supporters out there for Jim Webb. Let's see what the dirty, filthy Republicans can do with a former Reagan official, war veteran and Father of son serving in Iraq. I cannot wait to see how they make him out to be a traitor to his Country.
